Dr. Bob Lillard, one of the Cornerstone Foundation’s founding Board members, recently passed away at Loma de Luz. In his 56 years as a missionary he gave many great sermons. One of the most memorable he wrote not long after his mother had passed on. In it, he was introducing the idea of how much we owe to our Creator and Savior. He spoke of reading through his mother’s devotional after her death & finding a poem.
“I was going through her Bible and a devotional book she used and found a few lines of poetry written by Robert Murray McShane, one of the great Scottish preachers. Guess what the name of it was? “How Much I Owe.”
How much I owe
When the passing world is done,
When has sunk yon glowing sun,
When we stand with Christ in glory,
Looking o’er life’s finished story,
Then Lord, shall I fully know –
Not till then — how much I owe.
Even on earth, as through a glass
Darkly, let Thy glory pass,
Make forgiveness feel so sweet,
Make thy Spirit’s help to meet
Even on earth, Lord, make me know
Something of how much I owe.
So, why should we contribute, pray for, and be involved in God’s work? Not so that we can repay… but, in Bob’s words,” because I am a debtor ”. As the Master has instructed:
“Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required” Luke 12:48
