John and Penny Alden have served at Hospital Loma de Luz for 3½ years, arriving several months before the hospital became a full-scale, full-time in-patient hospital (January 2005). Penny, an RN, acted as Director of Inpatient Nursing for the first 3 years, and then took on the responsibility of staff education. John, a nurse practitioner and midwife, works in two area health departments and also in the hospital clinic doing women's health. They are actively involved in a “church plant” in the campo, with John tackling the job of general contractor for the construction of the church building these past 7 months.
